The Mt. Rokko Traverse: City, Summit, and Springs
Rising steeply behind Kobe, Mount Rokko offers one of the most rewarding and accessible day hikes in the Kansai region. The classic traverse route starts from the city streets, climbs through historic forested paths to a panoramic summit, and descends directly into Arima Onsen, one of Japan's oldest hot spring towns. It is a fantastic mix of nature, sweeping city views, and post-hike relaxation. The Route Breakdown 1. The Trailhead and Cable Car Option From Hankyu Rokko Station, you can either walk uphill for about 30 minutes through residential streets or catch Kobe City Bus No. 16 to the Rokko Cable Shita Station. The Shortcut Option: If you want to skip the initial grueling elevation gain and save your energy for the summit ridge, you can take the retro Rokko Cable Car up the mountain. From the upper station, you can seamlessly connect to the ridge trails heading toward the highest peak, shaving off about two hours of steep climbing. 2. The Ascent (Ice Road) If you choose to hike from the bottom, the Ice Road (Koori-michi) trail begins just slightly east of the cable car base. Historically used to transport winter ice from the mountain down to Kobe port, this shaded, forested trail offers a steady, peaceful climb away from the crowds. It takes about 2 to 2.5 hours of consistent uphill trekking to reach the upper paved ridge. 3. The Summit (Rokko Saikoho) Once you hit the upper ridge, the trail occasionally merges with paved roads, passing by the Rokko Garden Terrace. The sweeping views of Osaka Bay from the ridge are perfect. Continue along the path to the Mount Rokko Highest Peak (Rokko Saikoho) at 931 meters to capture your summit photos and enjoy a well-deserved break. 4. The Descent & Arima Onsen (Totoya-michi) From the summit, you will begin your descent down the northern slope toward Arima Onsen using the Totoya-michi (Fishmonger's Path). Once used by merchants carrying fresh fish from Kobe to the hot springs, this well-maintained, rocky trail takes about 1.5 to 2 hours to descend. The Reward: The trail drops you directly into the narrow, winding streets of Arima Onsen. Reward your legs after a long day of elevation gain with a soak in the famous Kin-no-Yu (Golden Spring) or Gin-no-Yu (Silver Spring) public baths. From Arima Onsen, you can catch a direct highway bus or the Kobe Electric Railway straight back to Osaka.

Hoshi no Buranko: Osaka's Spectacular "Star Swing"
Located in Katano City, Osaka, "Hoshi no Buranko" (The Star Swing) is one of the most rewarding outdoor escapes right in our own backyard. Suspended inside Hoshida Park, this massive wooden-plank suspension bridge stretches 280 meters across and sits 50 meters above the valley floor, making it one of the largest of its kind in Japan. While beautiful year-round, the autumn foliage season transforms the entire valley below into a sea of blazing red and orange. The well-maintained hiking trails leading up to the bridge make it an incredibly smooth and accessible trek. If you are bringing a gimbal to film the crossing or a wide-angle lens for sweeping landscape shots from the observation deck, the visual payoff here is massive. In this guide, I break down exactly when to catch the autumn colors and how to easily navigate there from the city center. Hoshida Park is a sprawling, quasi-national park that feels worlds away from the neon lights of Dotonbori, yet it is right here in Osaka Prefecture. The Bridge Crossing (星のブランコ): The bridge itself is an engineering marvel. Walking across the 280-meter wooden span offers a thrilling sense of scale. Despite its height, the bridge is highly stabilized. If you are filming, the steady surface makes it surprisingly easy to get smooth, walking tracking shots as you cross above the canopy. The Observation Deck (展望台): After crossing the bridge, a short (but steep) 15-minute hike takes you to the park's highest observation deck. This is the absolute best spot for photography. From here, you can look down and see the entire bridge floating gracefully over the valley, with the distant Osaka/Kyoto skyline in the background. The Climbing Wall: Right at the entrance of Hoshida Park, you will find a massive, 16.5-meter-tall artificial rock climbing wall. It is frequently used for national competitions and sets a highly active, outdoor tone for the park the moment you arrive.
