Soni Kogen: Nara's Golden Sea of Pampas Grass

Located on the eastern edge of Nara Prefecture bordering Mie, Soni Highlands (Soni Kogen) is a breathtaking natural plateau that transforms into an endless sea of shimmering silver and gold pampas grass (susuki) every autumn. Heading out for a scenic drive from Osaka takes about two hours, making it a perfect day-trip escape for hiking and breathing in the crisp mountain air. The real magic happens during golden hour, when the setting sun illuminates the tall grass, making the entire valley glow.

Soni Kogen is essentially a basin surrounded by the slopes of Mount Kuroso and Mount Kame, offering an immersive, 360-degree nature experience perfectly suited for outdoor enthusiasts.

  • The Susuki Trails (ススキの遊歩道): The basin is interwoven with well-maintained walking paths. Walking through grass that is often taller than you are feels entirely otherworldly. The paths are generally flat in the center, making for a relaxing stroll through the heart of the plateau.

  • Hiking Mount Kame (亀山ハイキング): For a more active adventure, you can hike up the steep ridge of Mount Kame. The climb takes about 30 to 45 minutes from the basin. Reaching the top of the ridge rewards you with a spectacular panoramic view looking down into the crater and out toward the distant mountain ranges.

  • Sunset & Golden Hour (夕暮れ時の絶景): As the sun dips behind the mountains, it backlights the millions of pampas grass stalks, turning the entire valley a blazing gold. Watching the shadows lengthen across the valley is an unforgettable way to end a day of hiking.
