Tsuribashinosato Camping Ground: A Riverside Escape in Totsukawa Village

Hidden deep in the mountainous terrain of southern Nara Prefecture's Totsukawa Village—the largest village in Japan by land area—the Tsuribashinosato Camping Ground is a sprawling riverside retreat that completely disconnects you from the overwhelming pace of city life. Located directly beneath the towering Tanize Suspension Bridge, which stretches dramatically across the sky, this massive free-site campground is the ultimate outdoor getaway from Osaka. Pitching a tent right next to the crystal-clear, emerald waters of the Totsukawa River and enjoying a quiet campfire surrounded by steep, densely forested mountain gorges offers an unmatched sense of tranquility. Whether you are seeking a rugged solo adventure or a refreshing weekend escape to disconnect and recharge, this location provides the perfect backdrop. While loading up the car for a scenic road trip is the most practical option, taking a slow-travel bus journey through the winding mountain roads offers its own unique charm.

Tsuribashinosato offers a raw, expansive outdoor experience with plenty of space to stretch out and enjoy the pristine natural environment of Japan's largest village.

  • Camping Beneath the Bridge (吊り橋を見上げる広大なサイト): The campground is a massive free-site area made of smooth riverbed stones and sand. You can set up your tent directly on the riverbank. Looking up, you get a highly unique view of the 54-meter-high Tanize Suspension Bridge stretching completely across the sky above.

  • River Swimming and Nature (十津川での川遊び): The Totsukawa River runs directly adjacent to the campsites. During the warmer months, the crystal-clear, emerald-green water is incredibly refreshing for a swim, skipping stones, or simply cooling your feet in the shallows.

  • Crossing the Tanize Suspension Bridge (谷瀬の吊り橋を渡る): Just a short walk up a steep path from the campsite is the entrance to the suspension bridge. Spanning 297 meters across the valley, walking across the wooden planks as they sway gently over the rushing river is a thrilling, must-do activity.
